The Green Agenda

The Green Party leader John Gormley recently stated on RTE Radio that he believed that the fundamentals of the Irish economy were still strong and that he was happy with the establishment of the assets management agency NAMA. To me this is further proof that John Gormley is ill equipped to hold a cabinet ministry. Many believe he has sold his soul to the devil for the trappings of power.

Don’t hit the disabled while bailing out the bankers

It seems inconceivable that just a few years after every politician in the country was lepping up onto the bandwagon that was the success of the Special Olympics, that the parents of those heroes and thousands like them are this evening in tears at the prospect of having vital services taken away from them. Surely with all of the money being wasted in the HSE every week, there is no need to hit those who cannot talk for themselves, or walk for themselves. Those who depend on the love of their family and the lover of their carers to survive. Yesterday afternoon in Galway, as the protest snaked its way from the city to the HSE offices at Shantalla, people were at breaking point; grown people were in tears at the thought that the little bit of State support they were getting to care for their relatives was to be taken away from them. Life was just about bearable as it is. Life without that funding and those services, would be nightmarish and throw Ireland back into the days of Peig Sayers and Dancing at Lughnasa.

We’ve saddled our grandchildren with debt - Phelan

The Fianna Fail-led government has effectively doubled the national debt at the stroke of a pen and its tunnel vision of pursuing the line that NAMA is the only show in town has had a similar financial impact on the economy to adding €50k to the mortgage of every single family in this country, Fine Gael Senator, John Paul Phelan, has said.

Monksland site drops over 98 per cent in value in four years

A 3Ha (7.5 acre) site on the outskirts of Athlone bought for €17.5m in 2004 and valued at €31m two years later, is now only worth €600,000, the Commercial Court was told last week.

image preview

Grifters

In this column last August I criticised the ridiculous economic strategy better known to us all as NAMA. I illustrated how it can never achieve its objective and how it will be a financial millstone around our necks for generations to come. It come to light in the last week that Messrs Cowen and Lenihan knew this all along but decided to carry on regardless.

Mayo solicitors’ firm to provide legal services for NAMA

A Swinford and Kiltimagh based Mayo solicitors’ firm has been selected as one of 64 firms to be appointed to a panel for the provision of legal services to the National Assets Management Agency.

There was good news for businesses yesterday when it was announced that Bank of Scotland Ireland has said it will lend €1 billion to consumers and businesses in 2009.

Understanding NAMA

In an unusual move, the Department of Finance published a draft of the proposed NAMA legislation for public debate and discussion throughout the summer, in advance of it being formally debated in the Dáil in September after the summer break.
